Walking and cycling - counselling municipalities

What is the training about

Non-motorised transport modes, namely walking and cycling, have the potential to address many of the problems resulting from car-oriented urban transport, such as air pollution, noise and a general reduction of quality of life in neighbourhoods. The many beneficial effects of walking and cycling on the urban environment are demonstrated by the social, environmental and economic vitality of cities which have chosen to focus their efforts on these transport modes, such as Copenhagen (Denmark), Groningen (Netherlands) or Bolzano (Italy). These and other examples will provide case studies for this training module. read more

The bulk of the training module will be dedicated to answering the questions: “How can cities take action to improve their environment for cyclists and walkers?” and “What is required in order to get more people cycling and walking?” The training will offer some theory regarding the methodological approach to be adopted by cities, but mainly it focuses on specific measures incentivising walking and cycling. These can take place within different fields of intervention:

  • Infrastructure: hard and soft measures
  • Policies
  • Marketing and campaigns
Each of these is illustrated using examples and case studies, such as the comprehensive cycling system of the city of Bolzano. Throughout the entire module, a great emphasis will be placed on interactive group work and discussions among the participants and with the trainer. close
